Food forensics employs the same scientific processes as any other forensic discipline. It uses science to provide evidence for how certain things occurred.

While the most recognizable forensics often involves the application of science to those criminal and civil laws that are enforced by police agencies and courts of law, food forensics usually results from the initiation of a court proceeding, or the belief that such a proceeding is likely.

As in other forensic disciplines, the original context of the sample is extremely important because it encompasses the original condition and setting of the sample.
